Before he gained quite such acclaim, he published a small-scale, intimate novel called Mongrels. The unnamed narrator is an indigenous boy on the cusp of puberty who relocates from town to town with his impoverished family, wondering if he has himself inherited the family trait of lycanthropy. Though it deals with many of the same themes as Red Moon -such as the plight of the marginalized-it does so in a more personal context involving family drama and body horror. Unique and compelling.
